Beyond the Ivory Tower

A collaboration with James Ryerson (NYT senior editor) and scientists David DeSteno and Lisa Feldman Barrett to help academics write for public audiences. In 2026, Wake Forest University became the project's new home under a five-year, $2.7 million grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

I've supported dozens of workshops, run the alumni community, and recorded, produced, and edited the video series and podcast. I now support alumni and fellows with ideation, pitching, editing, and other media. The new grant adds ten workshops, fifteen yearlong fellowships, and fifteen Public Engagement Prizes through 2031.

200+ alumni have written and recorded over 1,000 pieces of content, with hundreds of pieces placed in outlets like the New York Times, Washington Post, Scientific American, The Atlantic, and NPR.
